How come I experience a tingling sensation when I use your Echinacea tincture? Is this an allergic reaction?

A. Allergic reactions to the echinacea herb certainly can happen especially if someone has a known allergy to the daisy family. The chance is even higher if the flowered tops of the herb are used. Orange Naturals’ echinacea tincture is made only with the root of the plant and not the tops of Echinacea. It’s also worth noting that the bark/root is slightly sweet, and when chewed, produces a slightly numb tingling sensation on the tongue. So, the tingling can be normal and is a sign of a good quality, high potency echinacea root tincture. We recommend that you use caution and seek professional guidance to rule out an anaphylactic reaction.

Goldenseal has been shown to have anti-bacterial effects. I use it often, but now I’m worried that it will kill off my friendly bacteria as well. Any thoughts on this?

A. Goldenseal is indeed a popular herb because of its well known ability to help fight infections and strengthen the immune system. It contains a compound called berberine that kills many types of bacteria, including the ones that cause diarrhea. Berberine may also activate white blood cells.

In terms of berberine’s effect on your good (probiotic) bacteria, it may well be the case that it will kill off some of their friendly population. However, recent research is now starting to indicate that even ‘dead’ probiotics can still have a positive effect on the health and well-being of an individual’s microbiota.

So, go ahead and take Goldenseal as prescribed by your Naturopathic Doctor. Not only does it kill off bacteria, but it is great at easing those sore throats that so often accompany a cold or flu.

I have severe Psoriasis on the bottom of my feet. I have been trying everything from over the counter meds to prescription meds and although they help somewhat I am looking for something that will stop the itching as well as heal the area. Would the Eczema solution work for this or would you have something else that might help?
