Q. A close friend recently lost her husband after 40 years of marriage and she’s overcome with grief. She can’t stop crying. Do you have any suggestions for anything natural and safe to try that will help her with the grieving process?
A. Grief is a complicated process and trying to support someone as they move through their grief can be very challenging. That said, there are certain supplements that can play a role in helping an individual to be somewhat more physically and emotionally resilient during the grieving period. These are supplements that help to address the toll that grief takes upon the nervous system and the endocrine (hormonal) system helping to balance both energies and mood. A simple little protocol that could safely be followed for two months is outlined below:
Grief Homeopathic Drops: Take 1ml orally three times per day, but can be taken every 30 minutes during periods of more intense grief (up to 12 times per day). This homeopathic remedy has been shown to be very effective for both acute and longer term grief. It is safe and gentle and without side effects.
Advanced B-Complex with L-theanine: take at a dosage of one capsule two times per day with food. Ideally one capsule at breakfast and one capsule at lunch. It gives a boost to energy so it is best not to take it any later in the day than 4 p.m. The B vitamins are a group of eight individual vitamins that together are referred to as a B-complex. B-vitamins are water soluble and not stored in the body and need to be replaced every day. They are excellent at maintaining the central nervous system. The addition of L-theanine (derived from green tea; a unique amino acid that assists in the production of dopamine and serotonin) helps to elevate mood. L-theanine also induces alpha brainwave activity for relaxation without drowsiness.
Ashwagandha: Take 2ml, four times per day on an empty stomach. The adrenal glands, which sit on top of our kidneys, produce stress hormones called cortisol and adrenaline. Extended periods of grief can put a high demand upon the adrenals and tax them to the point of exhaustion. The result is that they run out of the energy and resources that the body needs to function properly. Ashwagandha is an herb that’s usueful when recovering from periods of exhaustion or illness. It has remarkable stress relieving and rejuvenating properties, and helps in calming the nerves. Our Ashwagandha tincture in an excellent rejuvenating and supportive tonic for the nervous system. Ashwagandha has also been used to reduce anxiety and depression, and combat effects of stress.
Magnesium Bis-glycinate 200mg: Take one capsule at bedtime. Magnesium is a muscle relaxant and can greatly improve sleep. It is also a critical nutrient for nerve function.
If the individual in question does not experience any relief or shift in mood and energy with this protocol then it is strongly recommended that they seek professional grief counselling and have a full work up with their medical doctor.
