Start Strong: The ABC’s of the First Morning Back
Saying goodbye to a summer filled with late nights and sleep-in’s isn’t easy. September seems to sneak up on us and before we know it, the days cool down and start to get a little shorter and kids across the country are heading back to school. The first day back can be daunting, but Orange Naturals is here to help your kids start off the week strong with expert advice for their first morning. Follow these tips to ensure your kids start the new school year energized and alert!
Play and exercise to enhance sleep
A key to a great night’s sleep and awaking alert can be as simple as getting out for some good exercise. Research shows that exercising helps you fall asleep quicker and stay asleep for longer. This is especially true for kids. Unfortunately, studies show that only seven per cent of kids in Canada get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day. We need to work to ensure our kids don’t fall into the other 93 per cent.
Now that summer is coming to a close, it is important to take advantage of the daylight hours available to kids after school and get into a rhythm of good quality, active play after school. Encourage games of tag and hide and go seek instead of an evening spent in front of the TV to ensure a great sleep at night, making the transition back to school as easy as ABC and 123.
Go organic for your first meal
Teaching our kids about why going organic is a smart choice is almost as important as ensuring they eat breakfast every day. When you buy organic foods, you are not only investing in your health and the health of your family, you are also supporting environmentally sustainable practices and humane animal welfare – all important messages we should be teaching our children. Our children will be inheriting the planet, so why not start off the day with this important environmental lesson mixed with a fresh and healthy meal.
Add a multivitamin to your weekly mix
Monday mornings, especially that first Monday back at school, can be busy and it can be hard for kids to get all the nutrients they need on the go. Supplementing your kids’ diet with a multivitamin might be a good idea to ensure they are getting all the essential nutrients. There are multivitamins that are formulated for every age and stage, ranging from kids to adults. It is best to consult your health care practitioner to determine which multivitamin is best for you and your family.
