Craving some sunshine this winter? Find out why …

Winter time often leaves many of us craving sunshine and warmer weather. Ever wonder why? Approximately 40% of Canadians become deficient in vitamin D (the sunshine vitamin)  during the winter months, so that craving might be a real need!

The skin creates vitamin D when exposed to UV rays from the sun. Living at northern latitudes where sun exposure is minimal in the winter months, beginning in October all the way to April, can create a deficiency and hamper important body functions, making supplementation necessary and sometimes even critical.

Why is Vitamin D so critical?

Vitamin D is critical for many enzymatic and important processes in the body, including:

Bone Health

Vitamin D is required for calcium and phosphorous absorption and integration for strong healthy bones.

Cardiovascular Health

Studies show that vitamin D deficiency increases risk of cardiovascular disease due to calcium build-up (part of plaque) in the blood.

Mental Health

Vitamin D deficiency is thought to hamper the conversion of tyrosine into dopamine, an important “feel-good” neurotransmitter in the brain, contributing towards feelings of low mood and depression.

Blood sugar maintenance

Studies shown that vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of glucose intolerance and metabolic syndrome – two factors implicated with Type II diabetes.

Immune system maintenance

Vitamin D has been identified as a critical “activator” of the important immune soldier T-cells that help fight off foreign invaders.

How to boost your Vitamin D levels

Since the body is designed to produce the vitamin D it needs when exposed to the sun, getting outside and exposing bare skin to sunlight is critical. That said, if you live in Canada like we do, exposing bare skin in the winter is probably the last thing on your to-do list! So what next…

Vitamin D can be absorbed from the foods in your diet, however, there are only a few foods that are naturally rich in vitamin D, including fish, egg yolks and milk (which is usually enriched with vitamin D).

Supplementing with vitamin D can help. The Vitamin D Council recommends supplementing with vitamin D3 as it is the form that is produced by the body, and the most absorbable. Orange Naturals has you covered with an entire family of Vitamin D3 products! No need for passports or sunglasses here (not that we’d turn down a vacation).
