Newborn Baby Hacks

If you’re a seasoned mom, you know how overwhelming the first few months of parenthood can be. As you add to your family the dynamics change, so it’s a whole new ballgame with each subsequent pregnancy.

But before you think your days can’t get any longer or the pile of laundry can’t get any higher, we have a few hacks to help turn your life right side up again after having it completely flipped upside down by a little seven-pound bundle of joy!

Rotating Diaper Bags

You’re out with your baby and diving into your diaper bag often, especially if you have a toddler in tow. Inevitably you’ll run out of something but what are the chances you’ll remember to replace it when you get home? The easy way to ensure you always have everything at your fingertips is to rotate two diaper bags stocked with the same supplies. At the end of each week or two, you can top both up and add or subtract items that you either need or no longer need.

Don’t forget to pack an extra t-shirt for yourself too – you never know when a public spit-up will happen!

Heat a Crib Spot

We may not always notice a temperature change when we walk into a room but our baby might. One way to make their crib a warm and inviting place is to heat a hot water bottle 20 minutes before bedtime, leave in the middle of the crib and remove when you lay baby down to sleep. A toasty warm spot might help her drift off to dreamland faster.

Coconut Oil to Fight Diaper Rash

Coconut oil has a multitude of uses; one of the best for babies is protecting against diaper rash. Soften a small amount of coconut oil in a glass dish in the microwave. Massage it in your hands and apply a thin layer to a clean bottom. Let air dry for a few minutes and then put on a fresh diaper.

Coconut oil can be used as a remedy for cradle cap, too. Very gently massage a small amount of softened coconut oil onto the scalp. Leave for a few minutes and softly comb hair and loose flakes off. Wash scalp with warm water and a gentle shampoo to remove excess oil.

Light for Night Time Changes

Flicking on a room light in the middle of the night can trigger your baby wide awake. Some moms use the light on their cell phones but even that light can be harsh. A red light, though, will still give you enough to see by and not be so bright that your newborn wakes up fully. Try putting a red light bulb into a small lamp on your baby’s dresser. It will emit a soft glow and still maintain a level of darkness.
