Orange Naturals Presents:
Why Probiotics are Awesome!
These friendly and helpful bacteria, who live in your body, are called probiotics.
Many probiotic
bacteria live
inside you.
How many?
Trillions!
Trillions
of probiotic bacteria live inside you.
They live all over your body!
1. They turn food into nutrients
Probiotics in our gut break down hard-to-digest foods like fibre
and lactose. They turn them into useful nutrients like vitamins
and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).

2. They produce neurotransmitters for our brains
Some of the nutrients our probiotics produce include neurotransmitters like serotonin, melatonin, GABA and histamine.
These neurotransmitters are passed to nerve cells lining the gut and make their way to our brain, affecting our mood and behaviour.
3. They keep us from getting sick
A flourishing and diverse probiotic colony on our mucosal lining leaves no room for harmful microorganisms like yeast or pathogenic bacteria to move in.
Some probiotics produce lactic acid, which inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella, E coli, and L. monocytogenes.
Some probiotics can even identify bad bacteria and other pathogens for our immune system!

Too much sugar and not enough prebiotic fibre
Our probiotic friends feed on rich, complex compounds called prebiotics. Prebiotic fibres like beta glucans and inulin can be found in many legumes, whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
A modern diet of overprocessed foods can starve our microbiome of prebiotic fibres. Instead, it provides bad bacteria and yeast with their favourite food: refined sugar!
Taking antibiotics
Antibiotics are great for treating infections caused by bad bacteria. But many antibiotics are indiscriminate, wiping out our friendly strains along with the bad ones!
With prolonged antibiotic use, it can take months, even years, before our gut microbiome fully recovers.
Too much stress
It can be hard to manage stress these days! Too much chronic stress can disrupt our digestion by creating more stomach acid and damaging the delicate epithelial cells lining our gut.
This can lead to a “leaky” gut syndrome— disrupting our microbiome. This means that bacteria, good and bad can get into our bloodstream, unbalancing our gut bacteria colony.
Here is what we can do.
