Teething baby? Try these at-home remedies.

Teething is an exciting milestone – your little one is growing their own set of pearly whites! But, this can also be a challenging time for them. They may be feeling cranky, uncomfortable, fussy and in some pain. It’s a lot of work to grow those teeth!

The good news is that there are ways you can help.

The lowdown on teething

Teething, or odontiasis, occurs when your baby’s teeth start coming in through their gumline. When teeth start to come in, most people think the pain is associated with the teeth cutting through the gumline. But that’s actually not the case. Before the crown of a tooth appears, a group of hormones work to break down your gums.

So you may be thinking, where exactly does the pain come from? While these hormones are hard at work, the gums become tender and start to swell, which is what causes the uncomfortable and painful sensation.

While teething can be a difficult time, it’s important to remember that it’s not a constant state. Teething starts at around 6 months of age, with most primary teeth coming in by the end of 12 months.

Can teething result in fevers?

Teething does not cause colds, rashes, diarrhea or fevers. However, some babies do experience a low grade fever (below 100.4F/38C) in combination with classic symptoms of teething such as drooling, irritability, and gum irritation. If your child has a temperature higher than 100.4F, it is likely a fever that’s unrelated to teething and you should consult with a healthcare professional.

How can I soothe my teething baby?

As parents, it can be hard to watch your little one struggle with teething. Here are a few at-home remedies you can try to help soothe your baby.

Cold objects

Cold foods or objects can help ease any discomfort that teething can cause for your little one. This is because they can help numb the pain at the source. Try taking a wet washcloth, tying it in a knot and placing it in the fridge for your baby to use later. You can also try refrigerating their pacifier or foods that they may enjoy. If your baby is eating solid foods, you can try some cold applesauce or yogurt during snack time.

You may also be able to find fridge and freezer-safe teething toys that can help soothe your little one. Just be sure to avoid teethers that are filled with liquids or gels in them as they can pose a risk if they are popped.

Gum massage

Gently rubbing your baby’s gums can also help provide relief from their teething symptoms. Simply wash your hands and rub your fingers in a circular motion to help soothe their gums. You can even try offering a clean finger or knuckle to chew on if your little one prefers.

Homeopathic remedies

Homeopathic remedies are gentle, safe, and effective options for a variety of health concerns experienced during infancy. They’re particularly handy for symptom-based conditions like teething and can go a long way in helping reduce pain and inflammation in your child’s gums.

Try Orange Naturals Teething for Kids, an all natural, glycerin-based formula designed to soothe gum pain and inflammation. Featuring soothing ingredients like belladonna, chamomile and more, these homeopathic drops can also help ease restlessness and irritability that come with teething.

Orange Naturals Kids Fever is another handy remedy to have in your medicine cabinet during this time. This formula contains three natural ingredients that work together to reduce fevers reaching up to 102F/38.9C. Belladonna reduces inflammation, chamomilla calms the nervous system, and Ferrum phosphoricum (iron phosphate) helps with fatigue and weakness. These ingredients can also help if your little one has a sore throat, toothache, or sinusitis.

Extra care & cuddles

Sometimes, soothing your teething baby goes beyond the gums. Try giving your little one a warm bath, followed by plenty of snuggles. Not only can it help them feel relaxed, it can also help take their mind off any discomfort they may be feeling. On top of that, comforting them with loving hugs and cuddles can help let them know that you’re always there for them.

With these teething remedies, you’ll be seeing less crankiness and more toothy smiles in no time. Congrats on reaching this new milestone in your baby’s ever-growing journey!
